Coursework Movie Evaluation Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

The filming of the preliminary was much easier compared to the filming of the final product. This is because with the final product we had to find locations, we had to create a shot list, script, draw u up a storyboard, cast actors, find props and organise a date and time on when we would shoot the film. The final product took up much more time to film because of the different shots we had to record and the different locations we had to film in. The preliminary however was much easier to film because it was shot in one location and there was no storyline to our clip therefore we did not need to film shots to show character emotion.

The editing process was much more laborious because we had more shots to cut and we had to edit them into sequence and find suitable sound track and music. With the preliminary we only had 7 shots that needed to be edited whereas our final product had several. Although this was due to the differentiation in length of the clips the final product was proven to be much more difficult to produce compared to the preliminary.

Coursework Movie Evaluation Question 6

What have you leant about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I have learnt several things about technology through my work with George on our film. I have learnt how to use a camera correctly, for example camera movement, camera angles and other forms of camera movement like tilt when filming. I have learnt how our film can be edited through the use of editing programs. George and I used Adobe première to edit our film. We learnt how fine cutting and constant gain edits can be used to make the film more professional and how it makes the film more fluid and continuous.

Once all of our work was near completion, George and I uploaded all of our work to our blogs on the website Blogger. Through the use of Blogger I have learnt that blogging is an easier way of publishing coursework. It makes it very accessible if I do not have my laptop with me. Work is easier to edit and you can add pictures, videos and website links very easily. George and I also used other websites that helped in the production of our film.

One of them was Scribd. This website allowed us to transfer documents to our blogs rather than copy and pasting the text to the blog making it look more. This taught me how to keep my work neat and organised and look more professional.

The other website George and I used was Wordle. This website created word maps. We used this to write out our options for movie titles. I learnt that through the use of this websites word map service it can be used to brainstorm and write several ideas on a colourful map.

Coursework Movie evaluation question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

We use iconography to attract a larger audience by including minor factors of other genre’s, namely: action and drama, with the thriller genre in order to attract a larger audience who are fans of action films and dramas.

The presence of the pistol is iconography for the action genre, this will prompt fans of action films as they will see the pistol in the trailer and see that the film contains a feature that they find entertaining. The high level of emotional stress is iconography to the drama genre, this will attract a audience that like a film with very emotional characters, they will see this as the film and trailer would contain very emotional scenes which will catch their attention and show that the film has a detailed character.

The target audience can relate to the film and the protagonist through the story line. The casting of a teenage protagonist will help our teenage audience to relate to the character. The way that the protagonist speaks and dresses is familiar to our target audience as they may dress in the same way or know someone who dresses in the same way.

The use of mobile phones is familiar to the audience and a large majority can relate to the character at the start by waking up not knowing what has happened the night before, although their experience would have been in a different situation than the protagonists situation.

Coursework Movie Evaluation Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Mine and Georges film was focused on audiences within the age range of 16 and above. Our film is also more male orientated because there are no female characters in our film and men are often more attracted to the thriller genre compared to some women.

Our film could also attract secondary audiences. For example our film could attract action movie fans because of the gang crime reference. Our film would also attract drama movie fans because of the emotion the protagonist presents to the audience.

Overall our film would appeal to thriller movie fans because of the storyline, the references to gang crime and because all the characters are teenagers which is quite uncommon in thriller movies.

Coursework Movie Evaluation Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Our film would be co-produced by either BBC or Film 4 through some subsidy money through the BFI. This is because our film is aimed at a local national audience because it deals with British Issues. Our film will be released shortly after Christmas because our target audience are still on school holiday and no blockbuster films are released during this period of time because of awards season.

Our film will be released in art house cinemas only due to low budget. A small amount of money will be put towards marketing due to low overall budget. This film will be advertised through posters, a trailer on YouTube and a teaser at film festivals, because this is the cheapest way to release a trailer
Cinemas will only show our film for a small period of time.

Once finished in the cinema our film will be broadcast over our films co-production TV channel. Lastly our film will only be released to British art-house cinemas and the co-production TV channel with perhaps a limited release to America.

Coursework Movie evaluation question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

In our film sequence we represented young people in a stereotypical way. With the characters voice we decided that he would speak as a stereotypical chav as we think that this is the common stereotype of a working class teenager, although later in the film sequence this stereotype is challenged when the protagonist is seen entering a middle class house, suggesting that the protagonist is pretending to be someone he is not. The use of slang by the characters and the use of swear words also contribute to the starting stereotype of young people.

The costume of the protagonist also contributes to the stereotype of young people as the protagonist as he Is wearing a tracksuit low down as some people think all young people do and the beanie. Again this stereotype is conflicted at the end of the sequence by the middle class house allowing room for the character to expand. Also the involvement with criminals is considered stereotypical of young people today.

Coursework Movie Evaluation Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Mine and George’s film focuses on the genre thriller, because of the storyline. Our storyline is based on murder and the protagonist not knowing who killed the victim so our film strongly relates professional thriller films because of our storyline.  Our camera work also showed that our film was a thriller because there was some hand held camera work, short cuts and a large amount of close-up shots.

The mise-en-scene used in our film shows that our film is a thriller to the audience because; our film opens up in a garage with two young teenagers on the floor. The garage door is open which could leave the audience wondering why it has been left open and who put the two in the garage. Our main character also shows that our film is a thriller because throughout our short film the character is very confused and does not know what is going on due to the events that take place.

The editing in our film also clearly shows that our film is a thriller. This is because our film begins with a fade in and ends with a fade out. This adds mystery to the film and leaves the audience with a cliff hanger making them more curious as to what happens to the protagonist throughout the film
Lastly our film would relate to a thriller because it the title sequence our main title (Blood Money) is coloured with a white font and a red shadow as a blood effect. The main title also has an ellipsis showing that our film is mysterious.
