Scene (1)

(Fade to Jamal and Drews feet, tracking shot from Jamal and Drew’s feet to a close up of the two characters faces. Drew is dead and covered in blood whilst Jamal lies on the floor passed out, with little blood on him and a gun in his hand. We cut to an establishing shot of the two and see that they are in a warehouse with very little inside. Cut to medium close up the two characters. Jamal begins to wake up.)

Jamal: (Rubbing his head) what the hell happened?

(Jamal slowly looks to his right to see Drew is lying dead next to him.)

Jamal: (Panicking) Drew…Drew…Drew! (Jamal notices the gun in his hand and aggressively throws it away) Drew…wake up man. Drew! Drew- Oh Fuck! (Jamal panicking grabs Drew and begins shaking him and trying to wake him up). (Slowly begins crying) Drew man…. (Yells) please wake up!

(Jamal grabs Drew and drags him over to a wall and begins crying)

Jamal: (Crying) I’m coming back man.

(Cut to a medium shot of Jamal leaving the warehouse. Begin tacking shot of Jamal running home transition to different locations to show journey home).

(Cut from journey home to establishing shot of Jamal outside his house)

Jamal: (Panting whilst anxiously looking around) Okay…(Begins crying)

(Cut to Jamal entering his home. Still crying the camera cuts to a close up as he checks his mobile and sees a text from the character Kush. The text says ‘Oi mate check your messages’ Jamal checks his messages ant notices he has 4 new voicemails on his home phone from Kush)

(Cut to phone audio)

1^ST VM Distorted Voice of Kush: Oi Jamal what you do after the pub?

2^ND VM Distorted Voice of Kush: Hey, do you know what happened to Drew last night?

3^RD VM Distorted Voice of Kush: (More aggressive) Jamal man! What happened to Drew last night 

heard he got into some shit…pick up man!!

4^TH VM Distorted Voice of Kush: I know what you did some yutes saw you.

(Cut to title and theme song)

Media Coursework Film Breakdown.

Our story is about an orphan and ex-gang member called Jamal Jones who is currently studying law at university and he is only making ends meet for money problems.

his younger brother (Matty) gets put into jail but claims that he is innocent. Jamal does not believe him.

a loan shark (drew) who is also the ex-gangs leader and he tells Jamal that he knows about his current issue with is brother and is willing to help financially with his problem.

a week later after receiving the money drew sends him a package containing a pistol and a note saying 'you need to use this to get the money back'

he calls his old best friend Kush who is he right hand man to Drew. to discuss the current problem at a bar. he explains he issue and informs Kush he doesn't want to rob somewhere to get the money. when Kush leaves the bar Jamal stays ad keeps drinking.

The next day he wakes up in a warehouse with drew dead next to him with drews gun in his hand bu he does not remember anything. he has constant flashbacks about what happened last night. as a result he runs home and sees that he has 3 answer phone messages from Kush.

message one says 'hey its Kush where did you go after the bar?'

message two says 'have you seen Drew around and did you do the favour for him?'

message three says 'I know you did it some yutes saw you do it'

Trailer Title Sequence

My chosen trailer is from the thriller Vantage Point. Vantage Point is a film about the assassination of the President of the United States of America. The title sequence of this film is very unique and relates to the films story line in general. The use of the colour in the images makes them seem as if they are CCTV cameras  that have recorded the events that take place in the opening sequence (protests, cars driving the President in and the gun towards the end of the sequence).

The use of the different images such as the protesters and the sniper rifle towards the end of the sequence paint a canvas for the audience that shows them the story line and what they suspect could happen. But like all thriller films there is a twist.

Media Film Opening Sequence

Our Opening Sequence. Jamal Jones awakens in an empty warehouse covered in blood and holding a gun. Next to him is Drew who is dead and like Jamal covered in blood.

Jamal not knowing how this has happened panics and runs home.

Jamal gets home and checks his phone which has four new voice mails.

His first voice mail says 'Hey Jamal what did you do after the pub?'

His second voice mail says 'Hey Jamal do you know what happened to Drew?'

His third voice mail says 'Oi I heard Drew got into some trouble do you know what happened?'

His fourth voice mail says 'I know you did it some youts saw you'

Camera Work

Camera Work

• There are different forms of camera work that effect the ways films are made

Camera work is broken down into four aspects. Shot Type, Angle, Focus and Camera Movement

Shot type is very important in film as it helps the audience understand both the characters and the setting they are in  through the use of different shot types.

The shot types in order are:

Extreme Long Shot:

This shot is usually used to signify where the character is and how certain other aspects may affect the character further into the film. An example is the train, this could be showing there is a scene in the film that involves a train.

Medium Shot

Medium shots are often used to show significance with a character and create a context to situate the character.

Close ups

Close up shots are often used in order to emphasize the characters emotions. it is also used to signify the importance that the character has in the story.

Angles

Low Angle

Low angles are used to create more superiority to the subject and add more physicality to him/her.

High Angle

High angles are used as the opposite of the low angles. They remove the superiority of a character and make them seem vulnerable and weaker.

Canted Angle

are often used to signify intoxication but in this still it is used to show disorientation

Camera Movement

Tracking shot

Tracking shots are often used to immerse the viewer in the narrative world.

Misfits Opening Analysis

The Misfits opening scene uses various aspects of mis-en-scene. It also shows very strong use of stereotyping.

The use of stereotyping is very obvious throughout the opening scene of this misfits episode. The first use of stereotyping that is noticable is the mixed race girl (Alisha) it stereotypes the way she dresses. the camera is always focused on her breasts and her general body. this is stereotyping the typical good looking girl being a slut.

The second character who is obviously stereotyped is the character Kelly. She is stereotyped in the way she looks and dresses her self. She is stereotyped as a chav because in the scene she is seen combing all her hair back and trying her best to look good.

The third character who is stereotyped is Curtis. He is show as an athlete throught the way he dresses and his visibly physical fitness. This is very stereotypical because in the real world african americans are often athletes are physically very well built. He is also very comfortable with his physicality. through this confindence it is quite predictable that Curtis would most likely be the sportiest out of the whole lot.

we only get short sightings of the rest of the characters at the very start of the scene but shortly after this when the dialogue starts the stereotyping of the characters is very obvious.

Overall though from that first scene it is very obvious that the enigma is a few youths doing community service.

Movie Still Analysis

This movie still from 'That's my boy' we see very different uses of mis-en-scene. The lighting is very naturalistic in the way it is used in this scene. By this I mean the lighting is perfect for the environment the two characters are in which is obviously a club of some sort. Costume tells us a lot about the characters in this scene. The character on the right is wearing an old fashioned grey blazer with a small checkered shirt that is tucked into to his jeans. The character on the left however is wearing a tight denim shirt that is tied around her stomach which is showing her bra. She is also wearing white short shorts. From anyone's perspective it is very obvious that the male character is the more mature and upper class character in this still from the way he dresses compared to the female character. It is hard to notice at first but the second sign the male character is definitely from the higher end of the social hierarchy is the fact that the female character is carrying two plates which could show she is a waitress.

The shot used in this still is definitely a medium/close-up shot. This is because we can see the two characters head to waist so their whole bodies are not showing. The background is also blurred so the camera is more focused on them showing that it is more a closeup rather then a medium shot but because both characters are in the shot this is could also be classed as a medium shot as well.

overall the use of mis-en-scene in this still helps the audience elaborate how certain aspects of mis-en-scene adapt the still into a story.

The Game Film Breakdown



The game (Starring Michael Douglas and Sean Penn) is a film about a very successful investment banker called Nicolas Van Horton. Through Nicolas's success he has unfortunately been introduced to a lot of grief. He is almost absent from his ex-wife’s life and his younger brother Conrad (Sean Penn). He is almost in his own world that has quite a repetitive form. By this I mean every day to day activity that takes place in Nicolas's life is very dull and very over repetitive in a sense that he does these activities every single day in the same time frame. Overall Nicolas's life is very dull and does not have much of a meaning. The whole reason why Nicolas finds life so dull and meaningless throughout the film is mainly because he is haunted by the death of his father. He committed suicide on his birthday. In the film it is Nicolas’s birthday. He meets with his brother Conrad who gives him a gift voucher to a company called CRS (Consumer Recreational Services). In this scene Conrad explains that the company 'makes your life fun'. Nicolas later find out that his world has gone from bad to worse when he signs up for this 'game' and that is only the beginning.

The film definitely represents the genre thriller because there is a large amount of suspense and excitement throughout because the audience would want to understand why this is all happening to the protagonist (Nicolas Van Horton).

The Setting is very urban. This adds a big sense of insecurity from the audience’s perspective and adds a sense of anticipation but not so much that the audience know what is going to happen to the protagonist but that we know something will happen that will affect him throughout the story.

The investigation is always based around a puzzle or an enigma which in this case is CRS. Which again adds to the whole mystery side of the film.

In a thriller the hero (Nicolas Van Horton) is the only one who can reveal the truth and solve the enigma. Which in this case is shown quite well throughout the film because everyone is playing the game everyone he knows in the film is playing 'the game'.

Like the game all narrative will be solved by the end of the film. In the viewers perspective Nicolas finds out it really is just a game right at the end. He hints throughout the film that he knows it’s a game but not an actual game in the way it is presented in the end.

overall the game thoroughly relates to the conventions of a thriller. very good film.

Mise-En-Scene Stills

Setting- The general scenery behind the chracter appears to look quite worn down. This adds the effect of showing this character as quite a working class citizen. It is also noticable that the room the chracter is in is quite small but in a way quite alive. By this I mean that the poster adds a bit of life to this seemingly worn down bathroom.

It is also noticable that there is a shopping bag on the right of the character which again adds a feel to the whole working class sense of this specific character because it is unusual to have shopping bag n your bathroom.

It also noticable that there is what appears to be a worn down medical box. Like the shopping bag this adds a more naturalistic effect to this characters socio economic position. Overall the setting is used in this still to show audience the characters socio economic position.

Lighting- The use of black and white has effects on this still by making it seem quite authentic and unique. It is also unique because through the use of black and white we see more emotion being presented through the character. The use of black an white in a hypotheitcal sense adds more life to the still as well. By this I mean that if colour was used the poster of the beach in the background would be more eye catching then the character due to the bright colours that would be use din that poster.

Character & Costume- The character in this is presented in several ways through his posture, body language and costume. His posture shows the audience that he is quite firm and may as a character set himself objectives throughout the film.

His body language could show audiences that he is quite agressive in the way he is pointing at the audience with a gun shaped hand. He could also come across as quite intimidating. some audiences in say England would define stereotype this character and call him a 'chav' or a 'gangster' in other parts of the world.

finally this characters costume. His haircut has a major effect on how audiences could see this character. Skinheads are often defined as quite rough

Movie Opening Sequences

This opening sequence is by far my favourite. Its very unique and uses awesome camera work and who can forget the end to this sequence! I say that it is unique because it is  POV. I like this because it shows you the life of a bullet which obviously consists of only two things, Harming or injuring others. I also like how there are blackout scenes and then a new environment is introduced, for example you first see the bullet in the factory then you see it at a port with a soldier. from there opens up another dock scene but one with more light and in a way life to the scenery and finally we see the bullet being used to kill someone. This basically represents the bullet in a didactic sense and it teaches us that bullets are used to kill and nothing more.

The slow motion bullet is just jaw dropping EPIC!

Amazing film and very creative OS

The second opening scene I have chosen is from the film trainspotter. it opens with two guys (Ewan McGregor & Ewen Bremner) running from the police. they are made very obvious as thieves due to the DVD covers falling from their jackets. It is made very obvious in the first scene that Ewan is a drug addict from his facial features. for example his eyes are quite baggy and red and the way Ewan describes his life is very abnormal compared to a what you would hear from your average persons description. Overall I this OS very interesting and informative of what drugs do to your life. I will defintaely watch this film in the near future.
